Tour Description
Our journey starts in Mindelo, the cultural capital and main port of Cabo Verde. We then head to Santo Antão, a walker’s paradise, still untouched by tourist crowds.
Cabo Verde was discovered by Portuguese navigators in the 15th century. Its strategic location transformed the small Islands into a vital crossroad for maritime trade between Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
Known for its rich culture, unique history, and vibrant gastronomy, Cabo Verde was shaped by multiple influences.
Mindelo stands out for its artistic energy and European feel. It’s a charismatic town with a faded grandeur, colourful colonial buildings, and a cosmopolitan urban beach.
Santo Antão, one of the earliest islands settled by the Portuguese, offers a contrasting landscape of dramatic mountains, vertiginous clifftop paths, and fertile valleys.
This tour is designed to discover some of the most remarkable and inspiring trails of Santo Antão, a largely untouched island.
The proverbial gentleness of the Cabo-Verdean people here is even more genuine. Feel the morabeza!
Holiday Grade
This is a Grade 6 walking programme.
It includes full and half day walks at a moderate pace over undulating terrain. Due to the volcanic terrain, part of the walks will be at the top of the grade and/or the terrain will be rough/steep underfoot as expected.
Distances: up to 10 miles depending on the programed activity (info provided in each day’s description);
Ascents/Descents: between minimal and mountainous tracks (info provided in each day’s description); the maximum altitude reached on this holiday is approximately 1600m.
Terrain: generally good paths and tracks, rough/steep underfoot sections, footpaths, cobbles, and stepped tracks, tarmac.
Walking poles and weather protection (rain/hot weather days) are highly recommended for comfort and safety.
